Windows installation (Mac instructions at bottom of page)

Step 1
You will need to download and install our software that allows you to connect to our virtual private network.

Please click on one of the links below that corresponds to your operating system and select where you would like to save the file when prompted.

Windows XP

Link 2 - http://www.rfdth.com/software/Openvpn-2.0.9-XP.exe

Windows Vista/7
Link 1 - http://www.denvpn.com/software/Openvpn-2.1.1-Vista-7.exe
Link 2 - http://www.rfdth.com/software/Openvpn-2.1.1-Vista-7.exe

Step 3
Go to the location on your hard drive where you saved the Openvpn software and double click on it to start the installation process.

Step 4
Your operating system may display security warning messages asking for permission to allow the program to be installed or for the installation to continue. Click yes, allow or continue for the installation process to progress.

Step 5
Once the installation begins you should not have to change any of the default options for a standard installation. Simply click ‘Next’ at every screen.

Step 6
When the installation is complete; click ‘Finish’.

Step 7
You need to open the OpenVPN GUI software that is now installed on your computer. This is the step that causes most problems in Windows Vista/7 if not followed EXACTLY.

In Windows XP
Click on the start button, go to your programs directory and select the OpenVPN folder, then click on the OpenVPN GUI icon to launch the application.

In Windows Vista/7
Click on the start button, go to your programs directory and select the OpenVPN folder, then RIGHT click on the OpenVPN GUI icon and select ‘Run as Administrator’ to launch the software in administrator mode (See screenshot below). Please note that each time you launch the software you need to follow this procedure and launch the program in administrator mode by right clicking on the software icon and selecting ‘Run as administrator’ as shown in the below diagram. If you mouse left double click on the Openvpn GUI software icon to launch the program and then try and connect to our service it will appear you are connected but nothing will have changed with your internet connection.

When trying to launch the program you may be presented with a pop-up box that says ‘OpenVPN GUI is already running’ if this is straight after installation and you haven’t rebooted just click 'ok'. If you get a message saying ‘OpenVPN GUI is already running’ after the first time you’ve used the program and/or after you’ve restarted your computer while running Windows Vista/7 you will need to close the program (as explained below) and re-open it in administrator mode (as explained above). This is becuase Openvpn GUI would have launched on system start up in your system tray automatically and will not have launched in administrator mode. It is advised you remove Openvpn from your Start Up program list as each time you reboot your computer you will have to close the program and re-launch in administrator mode in Windows Vista/7.

To close the program right click on the system tray icon in your system tray and select ‘Exit’ from the pop up menu. The system tray icon looks like two red computers with a globe in front of it and is show in the image below.

If you wish to run the Openvpn software automatically in administrator mode then you can do this by right clicking on the Openvpn icon and selecting ‘Properties’ from the drop down list, then select the ‘Shortcut’ tab in the pop up window and select the ‘Advanced’ button. There will then be in the pop up window with a tick box option called ‘Run as administrator’; make sure this is ticked and click ok. After you have done this you should be able to double click on the program icon to launch it like any other program and it will launch in administrator mode automatically.

Step 8
In your system tray OpenVPN GUI is now running in a minimised state. The icon graphic for OpenVPN GUI looks like 2 computers side by side with red screens and a small globe in front of them. If you hover slowly over the icons in your system tray a pop up tag will identify the correct icon as ‘OpenVPN GUI’. Double click on the icon to maximise OpenVPN GUI. You will now be prompted for a username and password. Enter the username and password that was supplied during registration and then click ‘Ok’.

Step 10
Congratulations!!
You are now connected to our virtual private network. You internet connection is now secure and all previous restrictions will now be lifted.

If you have any questions or are having trouble connecting then please visit our FAQ section at http://www.denvpn.com/faqs.php or email support@denvpn.com.

POINTS TO NOTE!!
Every time you open the OpenVPN program in Vista/7 you must open it in administrator mode as explained above. You must always open OpenVPN in administrator mode, if the program is already open from Windows start up you need to close it and re-open it in administrator mode for it to work.

You can only login into your account from 1 computer at a time i.e. you can not have two computers or more connected to the same account at the same time.

Your connection will stay connected as long as you don’t end it or turn off your computer. This also means that if you are logged in on one computer the connection will not timeout so you will not be able to log into to your VPN account on any other computer until you close the connection on the first computer.

To disconnect from the VPN right click on the OpenVPN icon in the system tray and select "Disconnect" from the pop-up menu to end your connection.
